Great Tasting Healthy Breads You Can Make
You can make great tasting healthy bread yourself. Even whole wheat and multi-grain breads. Even in your breadmaker. Let us show you how.
I’ve been making bread for years, mostly in my breadmaker. LIke most people, my first attempts at making whole wheat bread resulted in bitter-tasting bricks and I gave up and went back to white breads. Then came the day I hit my goal of losing 25 pounds and I challenged myself to learn to make great tasting whole grain breads in my breadmaker.
I decided to create this website to share what I’ve learned and encourage others to start making their own great-tasting healthy bread.
A Word of Caution
Making whole grain bread in your breadmaker takes a higher level of commitment than making white bread. To make white bread all you have to do is to follow the recipe. When you start making whole grain or multi-grain bread you should be prepared to experiment a little. My first couple of loaves were bitter tasting bricks. One was so bad that even the birds would not eat it. Be prepared to make a few ‘throw-away’ loaves while you adjust the recipes to your liking.
The Result Will Be Worth It
My wife used to love Orowheat Whole Wheat Bread. Now she says it tastes like cardboard compared to what I make. Of course, my first loaf was nothing like that. Nor was the second. BY the third loaf I knew I was making progress. By about the sixth loaf I knew I had nailed it when my wife took a bit and exclaimed, “THIS IS GREAT!”
One of the great things about this process is that it allows you to ‘tune’ recipes to your liking. We like our bread to be light and fluffy (most whole grain breads are on the dense side). By increasing the water by about 1/4 cup I was able to get the fluffiness we like. In addition, each different grain imparts its own flavor. By making the bread yourself, you can adjust the mix of grains you use to fit your particular tastes. Call it ‘Designer Bread’.
